AIT, Silverbird, and about 50 other broadcast stations shut for failing to renew their licenses now have a fresh deadline within which to pay.
The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) Friday said the arrears amount to about N2 billion.
Balarabe Shehu Ilelah, director-general of the commission, in another statement Saturday gave the fresh deadline ends August 23.
“Following intervention of concerned groups and visible concerted efforts by some defaulting Licensees to offset their debts, the National Broadcasting Commission hereby serves this notice of an extension of the deadline to shut down to 6.00 PM on Tuesday, August 23, 2022,” the statement reads.
The shutting down of the stations attracted wide criticisms, including from the Nigerian Guild of Editors and other non-governmental bodies.
