Avoid extortion, this is what you should know about NIN registration

There have been complaints from citizens about their paying exorbitantly for either the National Identification Number (NIN) or modification of their bio-data on the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) portal.

Consumertrics is inundated with reports of persons who alleged they parted with as much as N25 ,000 to effect changes to their particulars.

We advise Nigerians that NIN enrollment is free. Other free services are NIN verification service before enrollment, and National e-ID card (first issuance).

However, NIMC charges the following: NIN slip reprint, N500; modification of bio-data (excluding date of birth), N500; modification of data of birth, N15,000; National e-ID card replacement/ renewal N5,000.

We also advise that NIMC forbids cash payment to any of its officers for whatever purpose. The modification of bio-data can only be done at enrollment centers, while such should be made in person and not by proxy. It also states that all processing fee payment are to be done through Remita payment platform.

The NIMC has warned that local frond end partners or vendors usually seen in the public are not licensed to carry out modification services, while demand for cash or extortion by any NIMC official should be reported to actu@nimc.gov.ng or call 0815-769 – 1214 or 0903-495-9433.
